More porn, less satisfaction

Could porn use negatively affect our relationships? A study published in 2016 suggests that the answer could be “yes.” Three researchers surveyed some 75 males and 221 females who were either married or in a romantic relationship; to assess how use of sexually-explicit material affected their love life. This is what they found:

  • When the individual used sexually explicit material, ratings of relationship satisfaction, intimacy and commitment were significantly lower compared to when both partners were non-users.

  • There was no effect on sexual satisfaction, or passion, between individual users and non-users.

  • Those who used sexually-explicit material less than one-hour per month scored higher on ratings of relationship satisfaction, intimacy, passion and commitment vs those who used porn more than 1 hr per month.

Conclusion

The researchers report that the findings are quite consistent with previous research. The preponderance of the evidence suggests that the effects may be detrimental.

Though more research will keep on coming out to fine-tune our knowledge of the effects of porn-use on social relationships, more likely than not, the conclusions will show that porn is best left out of one’s life, not in it.
