Women & Porn

Viewing pornographic, x-rated content is not exclusive to men, many women consume these as well. In fact, up to 34% of women between 18 - 30 yrs old are consuming pornography. What are the factors associated with this behaviour among women? A 2013 report entitled: “United States women and pornography through four decades: Exposure, attitudes, behaviours, individual differences,” sought to answer this question, and the results were quite fascinating. Their findings are below.

The researchers investigated factors associated with the viewing of X-rated movies. The researchers found that viewing of X-rated movies was associated with:

  • greater acceptance of extramarital sex, premarital sex, and more positive attitudes towards teenage sex

  • More extramarital sex behaviour

  • Greater likelihood of engaging in paid sexual behaviour

  • Greater number of sexual partners

  • More liberal political views and less religiosity

On the other hand: older age, being white (vs non-white), more religiosity, and more conservative political views, were associated with less likelihood of consuming such sexually explicit content.

Conclusion

It is difficult to ascertain the direction of the association from the study itself. It could be that porn-use influences attitudes such that women start adopting more acceptable attitudes towards what would be traditionally viewed as promiscuous behaviour. However, on the other-hand, it is possible that women with already liberal sexual views are more likely to consume porn. However, regardless of the direction of the relationship, the associations were significant and definitely worth noting.
