7 behaviours for maintaining weight loss

The National Weight Control Registry (NWCR) is a list of thousands of individuals who have lost a minimum of 30 pounds of weight and maintained weight loss for at least 1 year. A group of  researchers followed 2000 + NWCR members for 10 years, and found 7 common characteristics of those who were able to sustain weight loss for 10 years.

The 7 behaviours to maintain weight loss:

  1. Greater initial weight loss = more weight loss maintenance
  2. Stayed physically active 
  3. Those who maintained for 2 years, were able to better maintain weight loss for 10 years
  4. Stayed on the diet / managed calories 
  5. Consumed lower amounts of dietary fat 
  6. Weighed themselves several times a week 
  7. Kept practicing restraint and resisted indulging
